The gold

Gold is a precious metal with a chemical symbol Au, from the Latin word Aurum. Compared to other metals, gold has a much higher density. The purer the gold is, the heavier it becomes. Gold's melting point is at 1063 degrees Celsius and the purity of this metal is measured through karats.

Karat is derived from carat seeds which were used for measurement because of its constant weight. One karat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. This is the method in which gemstones are weighed and this is not a measure of percentage. The highest value of gold is 24 karats which means that all 24 parts of the item is made of gold with no traces of other metals, which makes it 99.9 percent pure gold. So if you have a 24k gold chain, this means that the chain you have is gold in its purest form.

Other kinds of chains are measured in 22 karats, 18 karats, 14 karats and 10 karat gold. Among these, the 24k gold chain is the softest, as it is made of pure gold and at this state, this metal is still malleable. The hardest is the 10k gold which has 41.6 percent of gold (as it is already combined with other metals).

The color of a 24k gold chain is yellow and those that come in red gold, white and various other colors are no longer pure. Meaning, if you have a white gold bracelet, what you have in your hand is gold which has already been mixed with another type of metal.

Since the 24k chain is the softest, it is sometimes turned into a 22k gold piece instead - that's 91.6 percent of gold and the rest is alloy. This gives the jewelry sufficient hardness which makes it stronger and even some added color. If copper is added, it would give the jewelry a somewhat reddish color and when white alloy is added, it will give the jewelry a whiter look.

24k gold chains can also be worn by both sexes as a necklace, bracelet or wristwatch. There are many other styles and designs for these chains - there are hoops, flat chains, box links and gold balls. Handcrafted chains with more intricate designs are more expensive than those that are machine-made. Because of its purity, a 24k gold chain is the most expensive and heaviest type of chain. Proper storage and correct usage is vital to maintain its shine and luster, thus, making your valued jewelry a lifetime possession.
